In a groundbreaking move, the Gilgit-Baltistan Government, in partnership with Code for Pakistan, introduces the Volunteer Tourism platform, marking the initiation of voluntourism in Pakistan. This innovative project aims to promote responsible tourism, providing travelers with unique opportunities to engage meaningfully with local communities.

The GB Volunteer Tourism initiative offers a distinctive platform for sustainable volunteer experiences, fostering a connection between traveling volunteers and local residents. Targeting tourists eager to share their skills, the initiative plans to expand into various collaborative areas.

Mr. Sajad Khan, Additional Secretary Education and Head of PMRU, emphasized,

“GB Volunteer Tourism is a commitment to long-term development and sustainable tourism.”

The project focuses on empowering students, teachers, and voluntourists, fostering self-sufficiency in local communities, and contributing to the region’s economic growth.

The collaborative effort behind this initiative, initially endorsed by former Chief Secretary Mohyuddin Wani and prioritized by the current Chief Secretary GB, Abrar Ahmed Mirza, reflects a dedication to responsible tourism.

Mirza stated, “We welcome tourists to Gilgit-Baltistan, not just to showcase our region’s beauty but to encourage an eco-friendly approach to tourism.”

Code for Pakistan’s founder, Sheba Najmi, expressed her joy and optimism, saying,

“The Gilgit-Baltistan Government’s pioneering efforts in volunteer tourism fill me with immense hope for our future.”

The GB Volunteer Tourism project is now accepting volunteer signups, inviting individuals to contribute to the development and sustainability of Gilgit-Baltistan through responsible tourism practices.
