The Shahjehan S Karim Incubation Center at the Institute of Business Management conducted an interactive workshop titled Startup Finance, Financing Your First Startup Idea, giving students a grounded introduction to the financial fundamentals that shape whether an early idea survives its first few months. The workshop was facilitated by Syed Abdul Rafay, Officer I at SSKIC, who guided students through concepts that founders often learn the hard way once their venture is already underway rather than before they have committed real time and resources to it.
The session introduced students to key startup finance concepts, including cash flow, burn rate, runway, Customer Acquisition Cost and Customer Lifetime Value, along with broader financing strategies, using practical examples, calculations and discussion to make the material concrete rather than purely theoretical. For students who may be considering their first startup idea, understanding how quickly a venture can burn through its available cash, or how the cost of acquiring a customer compares to what that customer is worth over time, can be the difference between a sustainable early business model and one that looks promising on paper but collapses under its own financial weight.
The workshop gave students a practical understanding of how financial considerations influence startup planning and decision making from the earliest stages, well before a founder is dealing with investors or formal financial statements. Building this kind of financial literacy early can help first time founders make more informed choices about pricing, spending and growth pace, rather than discovering these constraints only after they have already made costly mistakes.
The session was supported by Raza Abbas, Head of Department at SSKIC, with Dr. Bazla Mukhtar and Dr. Essa Khan encouraging student participation and engagement throughout. The workshop reflects SSKIC’s broader effort to equip students with practical startup skills well before they attempt to launch a venture of their own, treating financial literacy as a foundational piece of entrepreneurship education rather than an afterthought.
