Government Plans To Support Twenty Women Led Startups Every Year Through Proposed WISE Lab

Published on

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has outlined plans to support women-led technology startups and female micro-entrepreneurs through dedicated startup assistance and annual digital skills training. Under the proposed WISE Lab, the ministry aims to support at least 20 women-led startups every year, helping entrepreneurs develop their business ideas, build their commercial potential, and widen their participation in Pakistan’s technology sector. The plan sets a clear annual target for the first time in this area and signals that the government intends to treat women’s entrepreneurship as a recurring part of its technology agenda rather than a one-time effort.

Alongside startup support, the plan includes training 200 female micro-entrepreneurs each year to improve their ability to use digital tools and technology-enabled business solutions. The training is meant to help women who run small businesses improve their operations, reach more customers, and explore opportunities in digital marketplaces. For many small business owners, particularly those working from home or in smaller cities, online selling and digital payments offer a route to a larger market without the cost of a physical shop. Structured training gives these entrepreneurs the practical knowledge to use such tools well, instead of relying on trial and error.

The proposed measures are aimed at the barriers that keep women out of technology entrepreneurship. These include limited access to relevant skills, business networks, and institutional support, problems that often prevent women with strong technical knowledge or promising ideas from turning them into companies. By pairing dedicated innovation support with entrepreneurship training, the ministry hopes to help women convert that knowledge and those ideas into sustainable ventures. The distinction matters, since many programs focus on one stage of the journey, while founders usually need help across several at once, from shaping the idea to finding customers and building a network of mentors and peers.

The initiatives form part of broader efforts to raise women’s participation in emerging technologies and technology driven economic activity, while creating more opportunities for women to establish technology businesses and contribute to Pakistan’s digital economy. The plan is still described as proposed, so the final structure, timeline, and selection process remain to be confirmed. For women founders and small business owners, the announcement offers an early indication of the kind of support that may become available, and it gives the wider startup community a measurable commitment to watch as the ministry moves from outlining the plan toward putting it into practice.
