Accelerate Prosperity, in collaboration with Karakoram International University Gilgit, has officially inaugurated the Centre for Green Innovation in Gilgit, extending Pakistan’s incubation infrastructure into a region that has historically had far less access to structured entrepreneurship support than the country’s major cities. Funded by the European Union, the Centre is designed as a dedicated platform for entrepreneurs, innovators, and young people to connect, collaborate, and develop solutions to the environmental and economic challenges specific to Gilgit-Baltistan, a region facing distinct climate and resource pressures that differ significantly from the urban centers where most of Pakistan’s startup support has traditionally concentrated.
The Centre is built to support innovation, enterprise development, and knowledge exchange simultaneously, with a stated goal of creating opportunities for locally driven ideas to grow into sustainable businesses rather than importing solutions designed for other parts of the country. That regional specificity matters given Gilgit-Baltistan’s unique economic and geographic context, where challenges around environmental sustainability, agriculture, and resource management often require locally grounded solutions rather than generic startup frameworks transplanted from Karachi, Lahore, or Islamabad.
The inauguration drew a notably high-profile group of attendees, including H.E. Raimundas Karoblis, Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, Prof. Dr. Abdul Razaq, Acting Vice-Chancellor of KIU, Akhtar Iqbal, CEO of Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan, and Zahir Sakhi, Country Director of Accelerate Prosperity. That combination of diplomatic, academic, and development sector leadership at the launch signals the level of institutional backing behind the Centre, spanning European Union funding, university infrastructure, and the Aga Khan Development Network’s long-standing presence and credibility in Gilgit-Baltistan specifically.
As a collaborative initiative between Accelerate Prosperity and KIU, the Centre for Green Innovation reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the innovation ecosystem in Gilgit-Baltistan and empowering entrepreneurs to build solutions for a more sustainable future. For a region that has often been underserved by Pakistan’s broader startup and incubation infrastructure, the Centre offers a dedicated, locally embedded platform aimed at turning environmental and economic challenges specific to the north into the basis for commercially viable, sustainable enterprises rather than leaving those challenges to be addressed exclusively through external development programming.
