Amazon officially rolls out support for passkeys

Published on

Amazon has officially embraced the growing trend of passwordless authentication by introducing passkeys as a more secure and convenient way for users to sign in. On October 24, 2023, the tech giant began offering passkeys, allowing users to sign in using biometric methods like fingerprints, facial recognition, or a personal identification number (PIN), making online security more robust and user-friendly.

Passkeys: A New Era of Security

Passkeys offer a significant security upgrade by being resistant to phishing attacks, a major vulnerability of traditional passwords. With this new method, users no longer need to worry about remembering complicated passwords or being tricked into sharing their credentials on fraudulent sites. By leveraging biometric data, passkeys ensure that only the authorized user can access their account.

This latest development brings Amazon in line with other major platforms that have adopted passwordless authentication as a way to enhance user security and simplify the login process. The option to set up a passkey is now available directly on Amazon’s desktop website and through its iOS app, marking a significant step forward in user convenience.

Current Limitations and Future Plans

While Amazon is rolling out passkey support across its desktop site and iOS app, some of its popular services, such as the Amazon shopping app and Prime Video, still require traditional passwords for login. Additionally, certain Amazon platforms may still prompt users to use two-factor authentication as an added layer of security. However, the company has acknowledged these gaps and is working to expand passkey support across its entire ecosystem.

Why Passkeys?

The move towards passkeys is part of a broader industry shift aimed at reducing reliance on passwords, which have long been considered a weak point in digital security. Passkeys not only eliminate the hassle of remembering or resetting passwords but also provide an enhanced layer of security through the use of biometrics, which are unique to each user.

Amazon’s transition to passkeys is a response to both user demand for easier sign-in options and the industry’s push for better security measures. As cyber threats become more sophisticated, companies are looking for ways to protect users without compromising on convenience, and passkeys appear to be the answer.

Looking Ahead

As the company continues to expand passkey support, it’s likely that more apps and services within Amazon’s ecosystem will adopt the technology in the near future. The shift to passkeys not only simplifies the user experience but also sets a new standard for secure digital interactions.

By joining the passkey revolution, Amazon is not just enhancing security for its users but also paving the way for a future where traditional passwords could become a thing of the past.
