A student-led project from Dow College of Biotechnology (DCoB) has received a Rs. 500,000 grant at the Sindh Innovative Startups Exhibition 2025, held in Karachi. Organized by Sindh HEC in collaboration with FPCCI, the exhibition provided a platform for emerging ventures to present their ideas to academic and industry stakeholders. Among the standout participants was Team Ecoplast, composed of BS third-year students Warisha Malik, Wareesha Atif, Laiba Waheed, and Amna Naz. Their idea, aimed at addressing environmental concerns through biotechnology, gained recognition for its sustainable focus and practical relevance.

Supervised by Dr. Urooj Javed, the Ecoplast team demonstrated a solution that aligns with the growing interest in green innovation. Their eco-centric approach earned praise for integrating scientific understanding with real-world environmental applications. The success of their project underlines the importance of research-backed initiatives coming from academic institutions and the role students are beginning to play in advancing sustainability-focused entrepreneurship in Pakistan.

The presence of support systems such as the Business Incubation Center (BIC) and the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) at DUHS played a significant role in enabling the team to reach this milestone. DCoB extended appreciation to these departments for their continued guidance and encouragement in helping students explore innovation beyond classroom boundaries. This reflects the strengthening infrastructure within academic setups that aim to foster early-stage entrepreneurial activity among students and researchers.

The recognition of Ecoplast at a provincial startup exhibition underscores the increasing collaboration between academia and platforms that promote innovation. Events like these create an environment where early-stage ventures, especially from educational institutions, can present their solutions, interact with potential mentors and stakeholders, and secure financial support that can propel further development. The acknowledgment from Sindh HEC and FPCCI contributes to building a culture that values sustainability and invests in its future through youth-led initiatives.

With the award, Team Ecoplast not only gains resources to further develop their project but also adds credibility to student-driven biotech innovations. Their accomplishment signifies the type of emerging talent being nurtured within Pakistan’s academic environment, where institutional support, mentorship, and access to startup exhibitions are beginning to translate into real opportunities. As more platforms recognize academic talent, the potential to turn educational research into scalable solutions continues to grow, positioning student teams as active contributors to the country’s innovation ecosystem.

The momentum created by Team Ecoplast’s achievement contributes to the broader vision of enhancing eco-conscious innovation within the country. With biotechnology emerging as a critical field for addressing environmental and industrial challenges, projects like these reinforce the role of academic innovation in shaping practical solutions. Their recognition reflects an evolving ecosystem that values ideas rooted in sustainability and led by informed, research-oriented student teams.
