Founder Institute Cohort 5 Hosts Legal And Equity Session For Founders

Published on

Founder Institute Cohort 5 held a session on Legal and Equity, aimed at helping founders understand the legal foundations involved in building and scaling a startup. The session was framed around a simple observation, that a startup can often survive a pivot but has a much harder time recovering from the wrong legal decisions made early on.

The discussion covered a range of topics central to a company’s legal groundwork, including choosing the right legal structure, navigating equity distribution among founders and early team members, drafting founder agreements, and protecting intellectual property. These are areas that shape how ownership is structured within a company and how disputes or costly mistakes can be avoided as the business grows and takes on new investors or team members.

The session featured Mariam Saleem, Strategic Legal Counsel at HP and FKM, and Hassan Mufti, Partner at Mufti Law, who shared practical insights drawn from their legal practice to help founders think through these decisions before they become problems. Their involvement gave the session a practitioner’s perspective rather than a purely theoretical one, addressing the kinds of legal questions that founders often encounter only after a dispute or funding round has already forced the issue.

The event took place on July 28, 2026, running from two to five in the afternoon, and was supported by Ignite, the National Technology Fund, alongside National Incubation Center Islamabad and a group of partners including Fauji Foundation, Cybervision International, and others backing the Founder Institute cohort. Legal literacy sessions like this one have become a recurring feature of accelerator and incubator programs in Pakistan, reflecting a growing recognition that many early stage founders lack the legal background to navigate structuring, equity, and intellectual property decisions on their own.

By pairing legal and equity guidance directly into the cohort’s curriculum rather than leaving founders to seek it out independently, Founder Institute is positioning the session as a preventive measure, aimed at reducing the number of costly legal missteps that can derail otherwise promising startups further down the line.
