In a recent Global Entrepreneur Equality Study, the profound influence of social background and role models on female entrepreneurs has been highlighted. The study emphasizes the pivotal role that family experience in entrepreneurship plays in shaping the aspirations of women entering the business world. It delves into the differing perceptions of male and female role models, shedding light on their impact on confidence levels. Notably, the study reveals that local role models hold significant importance for female entrepreneurs, with 67% emphasizing the importance of having a role model from their region or community.

The study underscores the substantial role of social background and family experience in influencing the perspectives of women launching their businesses. Family members with entrepreneurial backgrounds tend to garner more support, while those without such backgrounds often exhibit increased levels of optimism and self-confidence. Personal experiences in starting a business contribute to enhanced mental preparedness, resilience, and confidence among aspiring entrepreneurs.

Male role models are often perceived as innovators and inspiring leaders, while female role models are seen as stereotype fighters and barrier breakers. The study indicates that 71% of respondents have identified a male role model, attributing this to a lack of representation and awareness surrounding successful female entrepreneurs. Female role models, however, are viewed as hardworking individuals who challenge stereotypes and balance personal and professional lives.

Most female entrepreneurs prefer local role models over global ones, with 67% stating the importance of having a role model from their region. The study highlights that almost 70% of respondents relate more to local role models than globally recognized figures. Local role models, including family members, teachers, and like-minded entrepreneurs, are viewed as relatable and crucial sources of support and mentorship.

Despite the significance of role models, 12% of respondents report a lack of influential figures during their entrepreneurial journey. Reasons cited include unreliability, inadequate representation, and insufficient knowledge. Some participants stress the difficulty in relating to leaders due to diverse experiences and regional differences.

Conducted by DUAMENTES for the Aurora Tech Award, the Global Entrepreneur Equality Study covered over 200 female entrepreneurs across 40 countries. The study, part of DUAMENTES Global Diversity Studies, explores the impact of role models, social background, and other factors on women in entrepreneurship. The research design comprised an online survey, a focused survey on the importance of role models, and qualitative interviews with over 10 female entrepreneurs.
