HICOOL, the annual global startup competition organised by Beijing Municipality and the Beijing Overseas High-level Talent Association, has opened applications for its 2026 edition, inviting technology-oriented startups and small and medium enterprises from across the world to compete for a prize pool of USD 15 million in equity-free cash awards. The application deadline is April 14, 2026, and participation is entirely free of cost. HICOOL is a global entrepreneurship summit and startup competition launched in 2020 to support high-potential founders from around the world, designed to help startups scale internationally, connect with global resources, and accelerate their growth across markets. Since its launch, the competition has grown into one of the most significant annual startup events in Asia. Over five years, HICOOL has attracted over 32,000 individuals and more than 24,000 startup projects from 145 countries and regions around the world to participate.
HICOOL 2026 will set up seven major registration areas worldwide and offers 200 winning seats for startups, along with 28 winning seats for talent scout awards. The competition spans twelve technology tracks, covering areas including artificial intelligence and robotics, integrated circuits and quantum information, 5G and 6G and the Internet of Things, blockchain and fintech, medicine and healthcare, biotechnology, high-end instrumentation and equipment, advanced green energy and carbon reduction, intelligent equipment and new energy vehicles, software and information services, modern agriculture and food technology, and cultural creativity. The breadth of sectors means startups working across virtually every dimension of deep technology are eligible to apply. The prize structure is tiered and substantial. First prize winners receive RMB 2 million each, with second prize winners receiving RMB 1 million each, across 200 total winning slots. Beyond the monetary awards, HICOOL offers additional support such as office space, investor matchmaking, policy resources, and business introductions, helping startups grow beyond their home markets and compete globally. Winners are also offered a pathway to residency in China, visa fast-tracking, business setup support, and access to Beijing’s talent settlement infrastructure — including children’s education and healthcare provisions — for founders who choose to establish a physical presence in Beijing.
Eligibility is deliberately broad. Companies at any stage of development are welcome to apply, except those that have undergone an initial public offering, and only non-Chinese companies should apply through the international track. The one material condition attached to prize money is that winning startups must register a legal entity in Beijing within one year of the award announcement to receive the cash grants. However, if a startup attracts additional investment interest during the competition process, those terms and conditions are negotiated separately on a case-by-case basis, and China entity registration is not necessarily required for investment discussions. The competition structure moves from online registration through an assessment phase, then into preliminary, semi-final, and final pitch rounds, with the global final scheduled for August 2026 in Beijing. Each pitch session runs seven to ten minutes, followed by a three-minute question and answer exchange with a judging panel composed of investors, industry experts, technical specialists, and representatives from industrial associations. Startups are evaluated on innovation and competitive intellectual property, market potential, team capability, traction, scalability, financial viability, and the overall quality of the application. HICOOL offers both fully remote and in-person participation options, and as founders progress to pitch stages, they can pitch virtually or travel to Beijing in person. Travel is not mandatory, and travel costs are the responsibility of startups, though StartupLinkX may sponsor finalists to pitch in person in Beijing and winners to receive their awards there, subject to availability.
For Pakistani founders, this represents a genuinely accessible entry point into one of the world’s most consequential startup ecosystems. Beijing consistently ranks among the world’s top five startup cities, and a competition of this scale — with investor speed dating, corporate matchmaking, and media publicity baked into the programme — offers meaningful network access even for startups that do not ultimately win. The competition’s online participation option removes the logistical barrier that has historically made China-based events difficult for South Asian founders to engage with.
