National Incubation Center Karachi has welcomed Suleman Ahmed, Regional Director at the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, along with members of the commission, for a visit aimed at exploring ways to work together, support emerging startups and build closer ties between academia and entrepreneurship. The delegation also met startup founders at the incubator to hear about their entrepreneurial journeys, their solutions and their experience of developing a business. The incubator said the visit showed why stronger links between higher education institutions and the incubator matter for innovation, for entrepreneurial talent and for helping aspiring founders turn ideas into sustainable businesses.
For the commission, which sets policy for universities across the country, a visit to an incubator gives first-hand knowledge of how startups are built and where universities can help. Many university graduates and researchers start companies, but their institutions often have limited links with incubators, and a regional office of the commission can connect them. Meeting the incubated founders in person also lets officials hear what young companies need from universities, from access to research and laboratories to talent and mentoring.
National Incubation Center Karachi is one of the national incubation centres set up by Ignite National Technology Fund under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, with the backing of Tech Destination Pakistan. It is run by a consortium led by LMKT, and its startups can also reach investors and acceleration programmes through Orbit Startups. The incubator has supported more than 375 startups since it began and says they have raised more than PKR 12 billion in investment.
The announcement does not mention a signed agreement or a specific programme, and the details of any joint work between the commission and the incubator, such as events at universities or referral of startups, have not been shared. The visit follows a similar one by an official of the Sindh Higher Education Commission earlier this week, which suggests that higher education bodies are looking more closely at the incubator as a route for student and faculty ventures.
