IBA CEDIR and Ignite Explore Research Commercialization Partnership

Published on

A delegation from IBA CEDIR met with Ignite National Technology Fund on September 10, 2026, to explore opportunities for strengthening research commercialization, university-industry collaboration, and startup support, addressing a gap that continues to limit how much of Pakistan’s academic research actually reaches the market. The delegation included Dr. Lalarukh Ejaz, Director of CEDIR, Muhammad Hassan Khan, Associate Director, and Nimra Kamran, Senior Manager, bringing CEDIR’s leadership directly into conversation with the national body responsible for much of the country’s incubation infrastructure.

The delegation met with Muhammad Bilal Abbasi, CEO of Ignite, and Komal Kenneth Shakeel, Head of Partnerships and Collaborations, to discuss innovation funding, commercialization support, and pathways through the National Incubation Center ecosystem specifically. Central to the discussion was exploring how IBA faculty research, student innovations, final year projects, and student-founded startups could be connected more directly with funding, incubation, mentors, investors, and industry partners, a pipeline that, when it works well, can meaningfully shorten the distance between academic work and commercially viable products.

This kind of gap, where promising research or student projects stall after completion because no clear pathway exists to commercialization, has long been a structural weakness across Pakistan’s university innovation ecosystem, with strong academic output frequently failing to translate into startups or licensed technologies. By engaging directly with Ignite’s leadership, IBA CEDIR is positioning itself to plug its own research and student innovation pipeline into the broader NIC network rather than building parallel infrastructure independently, potentially giving IBA-originated projects faster access to incubation resources that already exist at a national scale.

For CEDIR, the meeting represents a strategic move to formalize what has likely been an informal or ad hoc relationship with Ignite into a more structured collaboration, one that could give IBA’s research output and student ventures a clearer route into national funding and incubation channels. As Pakistani universities increasingly compete to demonstrate tangible commercialization outcomes rather than research output alone, partnerships like this one signal a broader shift toward treating research commercialization as an institutional priority rather than an occasional success story.
