IBA CEDIR Hosts Finland Pakistan Discussion on Education Research Innovation and Industry Collaboration Opportunities

Published on

IBA CEDIR hosted a discussion on expanding collaboration between Finland and Pakistan across education, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industry engagement, reflecting a shared interest in deepening bilateral ties and laying a solid base for sustained institutional and industry cooperation. The conversation brought together Wille Eerola, Honorary Consul General of Pakistan in Finland and Chairman of the Finland Pakistan Business Council, Dr. Abdullah Zafar Sheikh, Professor and Dean of the School of Business Studies at IBA Karachi, and the IBA CEDIR team, comprising Director Dr. Lalarukh Ejaz, Associate Director Muhammad Hassan Khan and Senior Manager Nimra Kamran. The mix of a business council chairman, an academic dean and the centre’s own leadership gave the meeting both a commercial and an institutional dimension.

The discussion explored opportunities for future collaboration and longer term working relationships, including joint educational programmes, degree pathways, vocational learning initiatives, technology transfer, commercialisation and closer links between academia and industry in the two countries. Finland has built a reputation for its education system and for turning university research into commercial ventures, while Pakistan has a large and young population looking for credible routes into skilled work and entrepreneurship, which makes the areas under discussion a natural fit for exchange. Degree pathways and vocational learning in particular point toward practical outcomes for students, since they could eventually give Pakistani learners structured routes into Finnish institutions or recognised skills training linked to industry needs.

Technology transfer and commercialisation were also part of the conversation, areas where IBA CEDIR has been active in its own work with researchers and student entrepreneurs. The centre has been exchanging ideas with other institutions on how to move research from the lab into the market, and a Finnish connection could add an international reference point for how universities and companies in a smaller, innovation focused economy structure those relationships. No specific agreements or programmes were announced following the meeting, and the discussion is best understood as an early stage exploration of where the two sides might work together rather than a formal commitment.

The meeting adds to IBA CEDIR’s growing run of engagements with outside institutions, following its recent exchange with LUMS on research management and commercialisation, and reflects a wider effort by Pakistani universities to build international ties that can support their incubation and entrepreneurship work. For the Finland Pakistan Business Council, talks of this kind offer a way to connect Finnish education and industry interests with a major Pakistani business school and its entrepreneurship centre. Whether the conversation leads to joint programmes, exchange arrangements or technology transfer projects will depend on follow up discussions between the institutions involved.
