IPO Pakistan Invites Inventors to Join WIPO Patent Support Program

Published on

The Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan has announced an opportunity for inventors across the country to apply for free legal support to file patents both domestically and internationally through the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Inventor Assistance Program. The initiative is specifically designed for inventors who possess genuinely promising ideas but lack the financial resources to navigate the often expensive and technically complex process of patent filing, addressing a significant barrier that has historically prevented many capable Pakistani inventors from protecting their innovations and capturing the commercial value that intellectual property rights can provide.

The application process involves three straightforward steps designed to make participation as accessible as possible for inventors who may have limited prior experience with formal intellectual property processes. Interested applicants must first create an account on the WIPO IAP portal at https://iap.wipo.int/iap/, after which they complete an inventor application form detailing their invention and providing relevant background information about themselves and their idea. Once submitted, the application is shared with IPO Pakistan and reviewed by the IAP Steering Committee, which evaluates submissions to determine which inventions and inventors will be selected for the programme’s support services.

For inventors who are selected through this review process, the programme matches them with a legal expert who provides direct guidance through the process of filing a high-quality patent application at no cost to the inventor. This matching of inventors with qualified legal professionals addresses one of the most significant practical obstacles to patent protection, which is not necessarily the inventiveness of the underlying idea but the technical and legal expertise required to draft a patent application that adequately protects the invention’s novel aspects while meeting the formal requirements of patent offices both in Pakistan and internationally. Without this kind of expert guidance, many inventors either fail to file for protection at all or file applications that are inadequately drafted and therefore vulnerable to challenge or insufficient in scope.

The significance of this programme extends beyond the individual inventors who benefit directly from its support services. Pakistan’s broader innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem depends significantly on inventors and founders having confidence that their ideas can be adequately protected before they invest further time, resources, and energy into commercialising those ideas, whether through founding a startup, licensing the technology, or pursuing other forms of commercial development. A robust intellectual property protection framework, made genuinely accessible to inventors regardless of their financial resources, strengthens the foundation upon which Pakistan’s innovation economy can be built, ensuring that good ideas are not lost or left unprotected simply because their originators lacked the means to navigate the patent system independently. Inventors interested in applying or seeking further information about the programme can reach IPO Pakistan directly at 021-99230505, or via email at iap@ipo.gov.pk or saima.kanwal@ipo.gov.pk, and are encouraged to share the opportunity with others in their networks who may have inventions deserving of formal protection but have similarly lacked the resources to pursue it independently.
