LUMS and CERP Launch FemTech Innovation Hub to Tackle Women’s Healthcare Challenges in Pakistan

Published on

The LUMS Center for Entrepreneurship (LCE), in collaboration with the Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP), has announced the launch of the FemTech Innovation Hub Pakistan (FIHP) — a first-of-its-kind program dedicated to accelerating healthcare innovation for women, particularly in underserved and low-income communities across Pakistan. This groundbreaking initiative is being supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, marking a powerful convergence of global expertise and local insights to drive meaningful change.

FIHP is designed to incubate and scale startups that develop tech-driven healthcare solutions with a strong focus on women’s health. It aims to fill a critical gap in Pakistan’s health innovation landscape by addressing gender-based disparities in medical care through the lens of entrepreneurship and research. With a particular emphasis on maternal and reproductive health, digital health innovations, and chronic disease management, the program will help create a pipeline of scalable and sustainable startups equipped to tackle the complex healthcare challenges faced by millions of Pakistani women.

The program’s emphasis on evidence-based innovation is expected to yield long-term impact. By leveraging CERP’s data-driven research capabilities, LCE’s robust entrepreneurial ecosystem, and the global experience of the Gates Foundation, the FemTech Innovation Hub is strategically positioned to become a model for targeted, gender-inclusive health solutions in the region.

This initiative also represents a significant step forward in bridging the gender gap in Pakistan’s startup ecosystem, especially in the tech and healthcare sectors. In a landscape where female participation in entrepreneurship remains limited, FIHP provides a vital platform for women-led and women-focused startups to access funding, mentorship, and expert guidance. More importantly, it promotes an inclusive approach to innovation, where solutions are developed not just for women, but with women’s needs at the core of the design and development process.

By building a network that connects researchers, entrepreneurs, policy experts, and investors, FIHP aims to stimulate the creation of high-impact solutions with real-world applications. Selected startups will be given the tools and resources needed to grow—from early-stage incubation support to advanced mentorship and potential access to funding networks. These startups will not only benefit from technical training and business development services but will also receive strategic exposure to national and international healthcare innovation platforms.

The collaboration also reinforces the growing role of academic institutions like LUMS in shaping Pakistan’s innovation ecosystem. LCE continues to emerge as a dynamic hub where research, technology, and entrepreneurial spirit converge to solve pressing national problems. By hosting a program like FIHP, it strengthens its commitment to inclusive growth and capacity building for underserved communities.

As Pakistan grapples with serious challenges in maternal mortality, access to reproductive healthcare, and growing chronic disease burdens, initiatives like the FemTech Innovation Hub could play a pivotal role in transforming healthcare delivery for the most vulnerable segments of society. With strong backing, a mission-driven approach, and a focus on tech-powered impact, the FIHP is a promising step toward a healthier and more equitable future for women in Pakistan.
