NanoDrop Founder Abdul Samad Wins Prime Minister’s National Innovation Award

Published on

Abdul Samad, Founder and CEO of NanoDrop, has received the Prime Minister’s National Innovation Award for his work on affordable, energy-efficient water filtration through nanotechnology, marking a significant step up from a student-led idea to national recognition. The award adds a prominent government level distinction to a venture that has already built a track record of practical deployment, having previously installed its filtration systems across dozens of schools and university campuses using a technology designed to remove heavy metals, arsenic and bacteria from drinking water without relying on electricity.

The recognition reflects how student innovation can address real world challenges and create meaningful impact well beyond the walls of a university lab or classroom. NanoDrop’s core technology, a nanotechnology based graphene oxide membrane filtration system, has already shown measurable traction in the field, giving the National Innovation Award a concrete body of work to point to rather than honoring an idea still confined to the conceptual stage.

IBA’s Center for Entrepreneurial Development, Innovation and Research described the milestone as a proud moment for its entrepreneurial ecosystem and a strong example of innovation built with a clear sense of purpose. For an academic institution working to build out its research to commercialization pipeline, having a venture that emerged from its own ecosystem receive national recognition offers a concrete validation of the kind of support structures CEDIR has been trying to build around its student entrepreneurs.

The award adds to a growing list of recognitions for NanoDrop and Abdul Samad, whose venture previously won top honors at a Perfect Pitch episode earlier this year, underscoring a pattern of consistent recognition across different platforms, from televised pitch competitions to a formal national award presented at the highest level of government. As NanoDrop continues to scale its deployment of low cost, energy efficient water purification technology, the Prime Minister’s National Innovation Award gives the company and its founder a new level of visibility that could open doors to further institutional support and funding opportunities going forward.
