National Incubation Center Islamabad Convenes United States Pakistan Technology Commercialization Roundtable For University Research

Published on

National Incubation Center Islamabad, in collaboration with the United States Embassy Islamabad, convened the United States and Pakistan Technology Commercialization Roundtable on November 2, 2026, under the title From Lab to Market: Building Pakistan’s Commercialization Pathway. The session brought together representatives from universities, government institutions, industry and the United States Mission to examine how Pakistan can improve the journey from university research and technological innovation to commercially viable products and businesses.

The discussion focused on four areas. Participants looked at building stronger links between universities and industry, developing institutional capacity for technology commercialization, improving access to industry expertise and creating pathways for research driven startups to reach the market. These issues sit at the center of a long standing problem, in which university laboratories produce research that rarely becomes a product, partly because researchers lack business guidance and companies lack visibility into what universities are working on. By placing universities, officials and industry in the same room, the roundtable aimed to find practical ways to close that gap.

The roundtable identified several key areas for collective action. These include pilot validation of research projects, so that promising work can be tested under realistic conditions before major investment, and mapping university laboratories and resources, which would give industry and startups a clear picture of the equipment and expertise available. Participants also pointed to the development of commercialization training for researchers and institutions, along with stronger working relationships between academia and industry. Each of these steps is aimed at removing a specific obstacle that holds back research driven ventures.

The goal, according to the organizers, is a more connected innovation ecosystem in which research can move beyond the laboratory and become practical solutions, new ventures and economic opportunities. National Incubation Center Islamabad operates with the backing of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Tech Destination Pakistan and Ignite, the National Technology Fund, and the roundtable fits its role as a link between founders, institutions and outside expertise. With the discussion identifying concrete actions, attention turns to whether universities, industry and government can turn them into programs that carry research from the laboratory into the market.
