A startup’s early team can shape its direction, culture, decision making and ability to grow, and NIC Islamabad addressed exactly this challenge through its Founder Institute Co-Founder and Team Session. The session brought founders into a practical conversation with experienced co-founders who shared insights, real time experiences and lessons drawn from their own entrepreneurial journeys, giving participants a grounded look at how early team decisions play out once a venture is underway rather than a theoretical overview.
The session explored the range of decisions founders face when building their teams, starting with understanding when and why a startup may need a co-founder in the first place. For many early stage entrepreneurs, deciding whether to bring in a co-founder, and choosing the right person if so, is one of the most consequential calls they will make, since a mismatched partnership can slow down or derail a company long before it reaches its first major milestone. The discussion gave founders a framework for thinking through this decision more deliberately rather than relying on convenience or familiarity alone.
Beyond the co-founder question, the session also addressed identifying the right first hires and building an early stage team aligned with the startup’s specific needs. Early hires often end up shaping a company’s culture and working habits well beyond their initial job description, making the selection process especially important at a stage when a business has little room for costly missteps. By walking through these considerations together, the session gave founders practical guidance they can apply immediately as they think about who joins their venture next.
The session featured Kamran Taufiq Khan, Shahrukh Babar, Umer C. and Raza Afzal, who brought their own co-founder and team building experiences to the discussion. NIC Islamabad’s Founder Institute programme continues to receive support from the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication Pakistan, Tech Destination Pakistan and Ignite National Technology Fund, reflecting ongoing institutional investment in helping the country’s founders build stronger foundations for their companies at the team level.
