National Incubation Center Islamabad has opened applications for Cohort 6, built around a specific question aimed at academics and researchers, whether years of research sitting inside a lab could eventually become a scalable company. The program is designed for researchers who have spent years developing expertise and testing ideas but have not yet had a structured pathway to move that work beyond academia into something people can actually use, whether a product, a service, or a technology addressing a real world problem.
To illustrate what that transition can look like, NIC Islamabad pointed to researchers who have already made that move through the program. Shafiq Khan built Cognivox, an AI powered platform helping teachers and students use generative AI responsibly for better learning outcomes. Farha Masood, who holds a doctorate, developed Bio-Nano Innovation, a nanomaterial based patch designed to help wounds heal faster, translating advanced materials research into a tangible medical application. Usman Akram founded EKKO, an AI powered device helping children with speech delays improve their speech and cognitive skills, addressing a need that intersects healthcare, education, and assistive technology.
Through Cohort 6, researchers gain access to business training specifically built for people coming from an academic rather than a commercial background, along with team building and co-founder support for those who may have deep technical expertise but lack a complementary business partner. The program also offers direct business mentorship, investor readiness and growth support, legal, intellectual property and commercialization guidance, and company building and scaling support, covering the full range of gaps that typically separate a promising piece of research from an investable company. Importantly, the program frames commercialization as additive rather than a forced choice, explicitly noting that applicants do not have to leave academia behind to explore the commercial potential of their work.

The program is supported by Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Tech Destination Pakistan, Ignite National Technology Fund, Fauji Foundation, Founder Institute, CyberVision International, and CM, continuing NIC Islamabad’s broader effort to build a structured bridge between Pakistan’s academic research base and its startup ecosystem, an area that has historically lacked the kind of dedicated commercialization support common in more mature innovation economies.
