O’PASTA, a startup from the National Incubation Center Faisalabad, has become the first Pakistani startup to win the Global Startup of the Year title at the Startup Innovation Awards of the World Food Forum, held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome. The startup also won the Fighting Malnutrition Category Award, taking two honors in one evening. The Faisalabad center said the result is a significant milestone for Pakistan’s startup ecosystem, and it framed the win as proof that Pakistani startups can address global challenges through innovation.
The competition was a large one. O’PASTA competed against more than 800 startups from 100 countries, and the awards, which are run with MassChallenge Switzerland, narrowed the field to eight finalists who pitched live in Rome on October 14. The Fighting Malnutrition and Enhancing Food Security category is aimed at scalable and inclusive solutions that improve access to nutritious food and strengthen local agrifood systems. Under the awards’ prize structure, each category winner receives 7,500 dollars, and the Startup of the Year receives an additional 10,000 dollars, which gives the startup funds to scale its work.
O’PASTA is led by Founder and Chief Executive Officer Maryam Siddique, who presented the startup in Rome. The company is developing a food innovation designed to address nutrition and food security challenges in Pakistan, a country where malnutrition remains a serious concern. Before the finals, the startup took part in a mentorship program in Switzerland, where, in her words, it gained insight into European regulations and the regional startup ecosystem and mapped out a plan for expansion across Europe.
The win carries weight for the center and for the wider ecosystem. The National Incubation Center Faisalabad is funded by Ignite and the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and focuses on agriculture technology and related fields, and the result puts a product from its program on a global stage in food and nutrition. It also gives other Pakistani founders in food and agriculture an example of what a locally rooted idea can achieve in an international competition. The announcement did not say how the startup plans to use the prize or what its next steps are, and these details are likely to emerge as the company builds on the award.
