OPEN Circles Hosts Compound Leadership Session in Silicon Valley

Published on

Great companies don’t chase trends, they compound leadership, and this premise sits at the center of an upcoming OPEN Circle session featuring Dr Zafar Shahid, an engineering executive based in the San Francisco Bay Area who has led large-scale AI and software systems work throughout his career. The session is being framed around the idea that leadership itself, rather than any single product, represents the real long-term moat separating companies that endure from those that fade with each passing trend cycle.

Dr Shahid brings a background that spans engineering leadership roles at NVIDIA, Meta, and Technicolor, alongside collaboration with top research labs across the United States and Europe. His technical contributions include more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and three US patents, with his work on real-time format-compliant video protection recognised as among the most cited research in that particular field. Beyond his corporate engineering roles, he serves as President of iCodeGuru, a California-registered nonprofit organisation connecting learners worldwide with technology education, mentorship, and global career opportunities, giving him a dual perspective that spans both large-scale corporate engineering leadership and grassroots technical education.

During the session, titled Compound Leadership, Dr Shahid will address why leadership functions as the real long-term differentiator for technology companies rather than any individual product, along with how strong leaders build stronger teams that in turn produce better products over time. He will also draw on lessons from leading engineering teams at Meta and NVIDIA through several major shifts in technology, offering attendees a practitioner’s view of how leadership approaches need to adapt as underlying technology and market conditions change. The session will additionally cover how iCodeGuru applies these leadership principles to developing the next generation of engineers and leaders, along with broader reflections on building AI-driven organisations designed for sustained growth rather than short-term trend cycles.

The session is scheduled for Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 10 to 11:30 in the morning in Silicon Valley, California, with venue details to be shared directly with registered participants. The event is designed as a curated room bringing together engineers, technologists, founders, students, and innovators, with seats described as limited. Interested attendees can secure a spot through the registration link at https://lnkd.in/dVSx-z25 ahead of the session.
