Pakistani Robotics Startup World Context Hosts Berkeley Hackathon Eyeing US Collaboration

Published on

World Context, a Pakistani robotics data startup founded in January 2026, hosted its first hackathon at UC Berkeley, demonstrating the country’s emerging capabilities in AI and robotics on a prominent US academic stage. Thirteen teams competed using datasets supplied by the Islamabad based company, with a total of $4,500 in cash prizes awarded across hardware, software and visualization tracks. The event marks a notable milestone for a young Pakistani technology company entering US academic circles so early in its life.

World Context captures human demonstration data by recording workers performing physical tasks in factories, then converts those recordings into datasets used to train artificial intelligence and robotics systems. The approach draws on Pakistan’s manufacturing workforce and labor intensive production sectors to create training material with value for the global robotics industry, turning everyday factory work into a resource that robotics companies abroad are willing to pay for.

Founder and CEO Sherdil Ali Khan said the talent on display at Berkeley showed how advanced the industry is in the United States, and that there are substantial opportunities to learn from and work alongside US institutions and companies, adding that these learnings can be brought back to improve the state of technology in Pakistan as well. Sortbot won the hardware track with a project developing robots capable of sorting different types of objects, while Reconstructors claimed both the software and visualization awards, with a software project focused on recreating World Context data in physical environments and a simulation technology that impressed judges in the visualization category.

The hackathon was held alongside UC Berkeley student organization Blockchain at Berkeley, and received sponsorship from Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, The Hackathon Company, Lovable, Praxis Robotics and UC Berkeley Startup. The event points to growing interest in Pakistani technology ventures among US institutions, a signal that could open further doors for World Context and similar companies looking to build credibility abroad.

World Context collects data from approximately 8,000 workers in Pakistan across the textile, automotive and logistics sectors, using proprietary sensors, wearable gloves and head mounted cameras to capture hand movements, finger motions and pressure applied during repetitive work. The company sells these datasets to robotics companies operating in the United States and China, positioning Pakistan’s manufacturing workforce as a direct input into the global robotics supply chain. Manufacturing accounts for 14.8 percent of overall employment in Pakistan and 20.7 percent of urban employment, according to the Pakistan Labour Force Survey 2024-25, giving the company a substantial base of potential data sources to draw from as it scales.

World Context selected UC Berkeley for the hackathon specifically because of the university’s strengths in robotics and engineering. Khan noted that student projects built using the company’s datasets demonstrated applications the company itself had not anticipated, a result that validated the reliability of its human demonstration data in the eyes of its own team. The company plans to host similar hackathons at other universities while exploring deeper academic ties as it continues scaling its operations, extending a model that treats US campuses as both a testing ground and a gateway into wider industry recognition.
