Rural Management Interns Explore AI Startup Ecosystem at  NIC Islamabad

Published on

Twenty-six interns from the Institute of Rural Management’s Summer Internship Programme 2026 visited NIC Islamabad as part of their internship track focused on artificial intelligence and digitalisation, seeking firsthand exposure to how innovation is built and supported within a functioning incubation environment. Rather than approaching the subject purely through classroom material, the cohort’s visit was designed to give students direct exposure to the people, spaces, and institutional processes behind Pakistan’s growing startup ecosystem, offering a practical complement to whatever theoretical grounding in AI and digital transformation they had already received through their programme.

The visit included an overview of NIC Islamabad’s role in supporting early-stage startups, along with a tour of the centre’s facilities that gave interns a sense of the physical and operational infrastructure behind incubation work. This was followed by an interactive discussion covering innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, and the challenges involved in building ventures within a rapidly evolving digital landscape, giving students a chance to engage directly with the practical realities of startup building rather than relying solely on abstracted case studies or theoretical frameworks.

For a cohort specifically focused on AI and digitalisation, the visit offered a useful bridge between academic study and the actual mechanics of how technology-driven ideas are translated into functioning businesses, a connection that is often difficult to establish through classroom instruction alone. Exposure of this kind, particularly for students earlier in their academic or professional trajectories, can shape how they think about the practical challenges of innovation long before they encounter those challenges directly in their own careers.

The visit was supported by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Tech Destination Pakistan, and Ignite National Technology Fund, reflecting the continued involvement of public sector and ecosystem enabling bodies in NIC Islamabad’s educational and youth-facing programming. The session adds to a broader pattern of academic institutions increasingly seeking direct engagement with incubation centres as a way of grounding coursework in AI, technology, and entrepreneurship within the practical realities of Pakistan’s startup landscape.
