Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority represented Pakistan at the 9th Meeting of the D 8 SME Governmental Bodies, where member states discussed strategies aimed at strengthening regional economic cooperation and advancing small and medium enterprise development across participating countries. The meeting brought together representatives from D 8 member states to deliberate on practical action plans focused on improving collaboration, expanding market opportunities, and addressing shared challenges faced by SMEs operating within developing economies.
Representing SMEDA at the forum, Chief Executive Officer Nadia Jahangir Seth emphasized the importance of stronger institutional linkages and coordinated regional efforts to support the SME sector. Discussions during the meeting focused on key challenges including access to finance, technology adoption, and market integration, which continue to affect the growth potential of small and medium sized businesses across the region. Pakistan’s participation highlighted the country’s continued engagement in regional economic platforms aimed at improving connectivity and supporting enterprise development through collaborative policy approaches.
During the discussions, SMEDA also highlighted ongoing initiatives being carried out under the guidance of the Ministry of Industries and Production to support SME internationalization and business expansion. These initiatives include trade facilitation measures, certification support, business to business linkages, and efforts to integrate Pakistani SMEs into global value chains. Such programs are increasingly being viewed as important for improving export readiness and enabling smaller businesses to participate more effectively in regional and international markets.
The meeting was hosted by SMEDAN in Nigeria and reflected a broader commitment among D 8 member states to position SMEs as drivers of inclusive economic growth, regional connectivity, and sustainable development. Regional cooperation forums involving SME authorities have gained importance in recent years as countries seek collaborative approaches to improve competitiveness, encourage innovation, and create more opportunities for businesses operating within emerging markets.
