UN Women, with the support of KOICA Pakistan Office, hosted a Digital Startup Roundtable in Lahore, Punjab, under the theme Women Leading Innovation. The session served as a collaborative platform for policymakers, technology leaders, private sector representatives, and young women entrepreneurs to discuss the intersection of gender, technology, and entrepreneurship in shaping Pakistan’s digital economy.

The roundtable was organized as part of the Digitalization for Women’s Economic Empowerment (D4WEE) project, an initiative that aims to equip women between the ages of 18 and 35 with digital skills, access to resources, and entrepreneurial opportunities. By creating inclusive spaces for dialogue, the program seeks to ensure that women are not only participants but also leaders in Pakistan’s transition to a digital economy.

Discussions at the session centered on three core themes: the need for gender-responsive digital governance, the expansion of affordable internet access, and strategies for enabling growth pathways for women-led startups. Participants emphasized that digital transformation must integrate inclusivity at its core, ensuring women entrepreneurs can compete on equal footing with their male counterparts.

The dialogue highlighted the importance of policy frameworks that recognize and address gender disparities in access to technology. Policymakers present at the roundtable noted that inclusive digital policies are essential to unlocking opportunities for women-led startups, particularly in sectors such as e-commerce, fintech, and digital services where barriers to entry are often linked to connectivity and affordability.

Private sector representatives and technology leaders shared perspectives on how corporate partnerships and industry support can play a pivotal role in creating sustainable opportunities for women. By providing mentorship, access to digital tools, and financial backing, businesses can help bridge the gap between potential and performance for women entrepreneurs.

Young women founders also contributed their experiences, shedding light on the challenges faced when launching and scaling startups in Pakistan’s digital landscape. They emphasized the need for accessible training, peer networks, and safe digital spaces to strengthen their ability to innovate and expand their ventures.

The roundtable reinforced the role of initiatives like D4WEE in building capacity for women entrepreneurs through targeted programs. By focusing on practical skill development, resource access, and policy advocacy, D4WEE is shaping a generation of women innovators who can contribute directly to the country’s economic growth.

A key message from the event was that the digital economy’s potential will only be fully realized when women have equal access to opportunities. From creating inclusive digital policies to ensuring affordable internet connectivity and offering incubation support, participants called for integrated approaches that align government, private sector, and development partners.

UN Women and KOICA reaffirmed their commitment to advancing women’s digital empowerment in Pakistan, noting that the outcomes of such dialogues will inform ongoing efforts to strengthen inclusivity within the country’s technology and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

The event underscored how women are not only adopting digital tools but also shaping innovation and leading change. By fostering collaborations across sectors, the Digital Startup Roundtable highlighted the collective responsibility of stakeholders to ensure that Pakistan’s digital future is inclusive, equitable, and driven by the creativity of women entrepreneurs.
