In a recent interview, a seasoned venture capitalist shared insights into their entrepreneurial journey and successes in the proptech sector. Starting with reflections on their first job as a stockbroker intern in Los Angeles, the interviewee discussed the transformative experience of cold calling, honing communication skills, and building confidence.

The venture capitalist’s venture into the world of venture capital began with a summer project in 2009 with James Caan’s family office, known for his role in Dragon’s Den. Acting as the ‘first line of defense,’ the interviewee evaluated potential investments, learning valuable lessons from the renowned entrepreneur.

Reflecting on their career choice, the venture capitalist highlighted being labeled as ‘unemployable’ due to an unconventional background during their time at Oxford. They found a fitting avenue for their entrepreneurial skills in venture capital, a field that enables them to leverage their unconventional background.

Expressing love for the industry, the interviewee emphasized the ambition of founders aiming to change the world through innovative businesses. However, they expressed a desire for increased government investment in digitizing London, particularly in healthcare accessibility and decarbonizing buildings.

The interviewee’s proudest moment was the successful exit of their first proptech-focused fund, delivering significant returns to investors. Looking up to Silicon Valley founders and remaining optimistic about 2024, the venture capitalist anticipates growth opportunities and innovative solutions in the real estate sector.

When it comes to personal favorites, the interviewee enjoys running along the Thames or Richmond Park on weekends and has a penchant for 90s hip-hop. They also revealed their choice of Chiltern Firehouse for lunch and Soho House for after-work drinks in London.

Ending on a quickfire round, the venture capitalist shared their favorite book (Steve Jobs biography), film (Interstellar), artist/musician (90s hip-hop), favorite place in London (Primrose Hill), cocktail order (Frozen margarita), and coffee order (Espresso martini). As they plan a well-deserved two weeks off, Mexico is their destination of choice.
