NIC Islamabad’s SPARK Roundtable Paves Way for Commercializing Academic Research in Pakistan

NIC Islamabad’s SPARK Series roundtable titled “The Blueprint Has Begun: Commercialising Academic Research in Pakistan” brought together an influential mix of policymakers, academic leaders, and industry innovators to address one of the most pressing challenges in Pakistan’s knowledge economy, transforming academic research into tangible impact and economic value.

The discussion underscored a collective realization: Pakistan’s universities and research institutions possess immense intellectual capital, but the absence of structured mechanisms for technology transfer and commercialization has limited their contribution to national innovation and industry growth. The SPARK roundtable marked a strategic step toward bridging that gap, setting the tone for a more connected, market-driven research ecosystem.

Participants from leading universities, national research centers, government bodies, and forward-thinking corporates engaged in an open dialogue on creating stronger linkages between academia and industry. One of the central themes was the need for purposeful collaboration — partnerships guided not only by publications and academic recognition but by market relevance and commercial potential.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of reforming intellectual property (IP) policies to make them more transparent and researcher-friendly. Establishing national protocols that incentivize innovation and safeguard researchers’ rights was identified as a crucial enabler for building trust between innovators and investors.

Speakers emphasized that Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) across universities need to evolve into professional, business-oriented entities capable of brokering meaningful partnerships between researchers and the private sector. These offices should function as intermediaries that understand both the technical depth of research and the commercial realities of the market.

Another major point of discussion was the future of AI and deep tech commercialization in Pakistan. The proposal for a National AI Fund was presented as a way to ensure equitable access to infrastructure, mentorship, and early-stage capital for research-driven startups and innovators. Participants agreed that Pakistan’s emerging tech landscape requires sustained investment and policy support to convert research excellence into high-impact innovation.

Drawing inspiration from global models such as MIT, Stanford, and Ireland’s innovation frameworks, the participants acknowledged that while there are valuable lessons to learn, the solutions must be adapted to fit Pakistan’s distinct institutional and economic context. Localized approaches, tailored to the country’s capabilities and challenges, are key to building a self-sustaining research commercialization ecosystem.

NIC Islamabad’s SPARK Series continues to establish itself as a vital platform for shaping national innovation policy and driving the dialogue around research-driven entrepreneurship. This roundtable served as a foundational moment, setting the policy, infrastructure, and cultural groundwork for a future where universities play a central role in Pakistan’s innovation economy.

By convening thought leaders from academia, government, and industry, the SPARK initiative reaffirmed the shared commitment to transform Pakistan’s research landscape into one that fuels economic growth, competitiveness, and sustainable innovation.
