Zayn VC Session Shows Founders How Investors Evaluate Early Stage Startups

Published on

Zayn VC brought together investors, business leaders and prospective angels at NIC Islamabad for a session that turned its Investor Readiness Program in a new direction, shifting the focus from founder preparation to investor perspective. The afternoon centered on Faisal Aftab, Founder and General Partner of Zayn VC, who walked participants through how investors actually evaluate early-stage companies, following three earlier sessions in the program that had concentrated on helping founders sharpen their numbers, their narrative, their pitch decks and their readiness for due diligence. By flipping the conversation toward the investor’s side of the table, the session aimed to give both founders and the broader ecosystem a clearer picture of how capital allocation decisions are actually made.

Over three hours, the discussion moved past the familiar language of pitch decks and valuations to examine what genuinely makes a startup investable. Participants explored how investors weigh potential against risk, what qualities they look for in both a founder and a business, and how those criteria shift as a company moves from the seed stage toward scale. Rather than presenting a checklist of investor expectations, the session framed investment decisions as a dynamic assessment that evolves alongside a company’s growth trajectory, giving founders in the room a more nuanced understanding of what investors are actually evaluating at each stage.

The most valuable portion of the session came through audience questions, described as direct, specific and often probing, the kind of engagement that distinguishes a genuinely useful investor education session from a purely ceremonial one. This level of engagement reflected the growing sophistication of Pakistan’s startup ecosystem, where founders and prospective investors alike are increasingly seeking substantive dialogue rather than surface-level networking. Organizers extended their thanks to Faisal Aftab for sharing his experience candidly, along with all attendees who engaged with the discussion throughout the afternoon.

The session’s timing carries added significance, arriving just days before the NIC Islamabad Investor Summit scheduled for September 29. Founders participating in the summit will step in having spent the past month preparing for the kinds of questions investors typically ask, while a broader group of ecosystem participants will now bring a deeper understanding of how those questions are shaped in the first place. The session was supported by the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication Pakistan, Tech Destination Pakistan, and Ignite National Technology Fund, reflecting continued institutional backing for initiatives that strengthen the dialogue between Pakistan’s founders and its investment community.
