Institute Of Business Administration Karachi Hosts Sessions On Startup Legal Structure And Investor Pitching

Published on

Most startups do not fail because of a bad idea. They fail because of a poor structure, a weak pitch or a legal detail that nobody saw coming. That was the starting point for two sessions held over the weekend at the Centre for Entrepreneurial Development, Innovation and Research at the Institute of Business Administration Karachi, where participants in the Certificate in Entrepreneurship and CITE programs worked through both the legal groundwork of a young company and the way it presents itself to investors.

The first session, titled Structuring Your Startup: Legal, Intellectual Property and Tax Essentials, was led by Raza Zaidi and focused on protecting what founders build before it is too late. Founders often concentrate on product and customers while leaving questions of company structure, ownership of ideas and tax obligations for later, and that delay can create problems that are costly or impossible to fix once a company begins to grow or attract funding. By covering these essentials early, the session gave participants a clearer sense of which decisions need attention at the start, and why mistakes in structure or the protection of intellectual property can follow a company through every stage that comes after.

The second session, Pitch Perfect: Deck Design, Storytelling and Investor Outreach, was led by Sibtain Jiwani and addressed the other side of the challenge: turning an idea into a story that investors actually remember. A strong idea does not speak for itself, and many promising ventures are passed over because they cannot explain their value in a clear and engaging way. The session covered how to design a pitch deck, how to use storytelling to hold an audience’s attention and how to approach investors in a deliberate manner. Together, the lessons were aimed at helping founders present their businesses with confidence in front of the people who decide whether to fund them.

Pairing the two topics in a single weekend reflects a practical view of what early stage founders need. A well told story attracts attention, but it only carries weight if the company behind it has a sound structure and has protected its core assets, while a well structured company still needs to communicate its promise effectively to raise capital. By addressing both, the Centre for Entrepreneurial Development, Innovation and Research gave participants tools for building companies that are prepared on the legal side and persuasive on the investor side. For those taking part in the Certificate in Entrepreneurship and CITE programs, the sessions added concrete, applicable lessons to their wider learning, and they point to the kind of preparation that can separate startups that survive from those that do not.
