Startup Grind Lahore Hosts Alif COO Afra Nehal on Cracking Enterprise Go To Market Strategy

Published on

Startup Grind Lahore recently hosted Afra Nehal, an early stage investor based in San Francisco and the Chief Operating Officer of Alif, for a fireside chat on how startups can crack enterprise go to market strategy on a global scale. The session took place on 26 October at Daftarkhwan Downtown in Gulberg, Lahore, and was moderated by Iftikhar Hussain, the director of the Startup Grind Lahore chapter. Alif is an early stage venture firm that invests up to $500,000 in high growth technology startups, which gave Nehal a view of the topic from both the investor side and the operating side. The organizers opened the event by pointing to a gap that many founders recognize. Scaling a company in the local market is one challenge, while winning large corporate customers abroad is a different problem that calls for a different approach.

Nehal drew on her experience in Silicon Valley to explain what it takes for a startup to position its product, earn the trust of large corporate buyers and work through enterprise sales cycles that are often long and complicated. The organizers summarized the discussion in three takeaways. The first concerned how enterprise buyers think, and it centered on moving from a transactional sales mindset to one built around long term value creation. A corporate buyer is committing budget and reputation to a vendor, so a startup that treats the deal as a one off sale is at a disadvantage against one that shows how it will keep delivering results after the contract is signed.

The second takeaway dealt with global positioning, and in particular how companies from emerging technology ecosystems can package their solutions so that enterprise customers abroad trust them. For founders in Lahore and other Pakistani cities, the question is often how to present a product built far from the buyer’s market in a way that reduces perceived risk. The third takeaway was practical. Nehal shared tactical frameworks for shortening long sales cycles and scaling efficiently, which gave attendees a set of working steps they could test in their own sales process rather than only a set of principles. The session also covered how to validate product market fit and build a repeatable customer acquisition model before taking on high value enterprise accounts, which are topics founders usually face at the point when early traction has to turn into a repeatable process.

Startup Grind Lahore thanked Nehal for sharing her global perspective with the community and thanked everyone who attended for an evening of learning and connection. It also credited the Daftarkhwan team as the venue partner. The organizers behind the event include Iftikhar Hussain, Hassan Azhar, Hammad Anwar and Saad Idrees. Fireside chats like this one are a regular part of the chapter’s program, which brings investors and operators who are not always accessible to local founders into direct conversation with them. For startups in Lahore weighing their first enterprise customers, the session offered a clear message from an investor who sees many such pitches, which is that large corporate buyers respond to long term value, clear positioning and a sales process that can be repeated.
