The Ministry of IT and Telecom along with Ignite National Technology Fund has announced the establishment of two outdoor Digital Learning Pods in Islamabad as part of the Digital Roshni initiative. This step is intended to expand digital learning opportunities in open public spaces where accessibility often remains limited. The pods will be installed in F 9 Park and Saidpur Village, two locations frequently visited by families and communities from diverse backgrounds. By placing these learning spaces in public areas rather than confined institutional settings, the initiative seeks to reduce digital inequality in a practical and approachable way aligned with the broader commitments under the Prime Minister’s Digital Pakistan Vision.
Each pod has been designed as a community centered space equipped with features that allow uninterrupted educational access. According to project information, the pods will include a large digital screen, structured seating area, stable internet connectivity and a backup power setup to ensure that sessions can continue without disruption. All educational content will be offered entirely in Urdu to maximize inclusion and reach. The material is structured for children, youth, women, persons with disabilities and the transgender community, reflecting an intentional effort to support groups that often encounter barriers to digital learning tools. The content library covers digital literacy, freelancing fundamentals, civic awareness, financial basics, health and hygiene guidance and introductory lessons related to emerging technologies with a focus on Artificial Intelligence.
Daily operations at each pod will be managed by a dedicated facilitator responsible for conducting sessions, assisting users as they explore material and maintaining equipment to ensure smooth functioning. Ignite has highlighted that the modular structures are weather resistant and engineered to support regular community use. This ensures that learning spaces remain accessible regardless of seasonal changes or outdoor conditions. The design also allows the pods to act as approachable public resources rather than feeling like restricted or formal setups.
To expand community engagement, Digital Roshni includes an outreach component involving NGOs, civil society organizations and local influencers. This outreach is intended to encourage participation from groups that may not typically seek out digital learning resources or may lack the confidence to navigate them independently. By building awareness and facilitating community involvement, the initiative aims to create an environment where people feel supported in stepping into digital education pathways.
The initiative is structured as a 13 month pilot that will assess how the model performs in real community settings. As part of the sustainability plan, the implementing organization is required to develop sponsorships or partnerships to support long term continuity. Data from the pilot period will help determine whether the model can be expanded to additional cities. By testing engagement levels, operational feasibility and community response, the project intends to shape an approach that can support broader adoption across Pakistan if it proves effective in Islamabad.
