The Gilgit-Baltistan Government, in collaboration with the Performance Management & Reforms Unit (PMRU) and Code for Pakistan, has introduced the GB Volunteer Tourism platform. This innovative project pioneers voluntourism in Pakistan, promoting responsible tourism and providing travelers with meaningful opportunities to engage with and contribute to local communities.

The initiative aims to create a bridge between traveling volunteers and residents, offering a unique platform for sustainable volunteer experiences. Targeting tourists eager to share their skills, the GB Volunteer Tourism project plans to expand its collaboration areas in the future.

Mr. Sajad Khan, Additional Secretary Education and Head of PMRU, emphasized the project’s commitment to long-term development and sustainable tourism. The initiative seeks to empower students, teachers, and voluntourists, fostering self-sufficiency within local communities and contributing to the economic growth of the region.

Endorsed initially by former Chief Secretary Mohyuddin Wani and continuing to receive prioritization under the new Chief Secretary Abrar Ahmed Mirza, the project was set into motion by former Commissioner of Diamer, Altamash Janjua.

Chief Secretary GB, Abrar Ahmed Mirza, expressed the region’s welcoming stance towards tourists, highlighting the goal of promoting an eco-friendly approach to tourism. He believes that each visitor can play a crucial role in shaping sustainable travel practices to preserve the natural wonders of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Sheba Najmi, founder of Code for Pakistan, commended the efforts of the Gilgit-Baltistan Government in pioneering volunteer tourism. Drawing on her own experience as a global volunteer tourist, Najmi expressed joy and optimism for the future.

The GB Volunteer Tourism project is accepting volunteer signups, encouraging individuals to contribute to the region’s sustainable development through meaningful travel experiences.
