Iqra University Hosts SkillUp Batch IV Orientation for Freelancing Program

Published on

Iqra University has hosted the orientation ceremony for SkillUp Batch IV, the latest cohort of its freelance skills development programme run through IU CORE, the university’s entrepreneurship and innovation centre. The session marked the formal beginning of the batch’s learning journey and brought together incoming participants, programme leadership, and alumni who have already built active freelancing careers through the programme. Umair Ahmed Khan, Head of the SkillUp Freelance Program and Manager of IU CORE, addressed the new batch, welcoming participants and sharing guidance on the opportunities, learning pathways, and professional prospects the programme is designed to open for students who commit to developing in-demand digital skills.

The SkillUp Freelance Program sits within IU CORE’s broader mandate to prepare Iqra University students for economic participation in the digital economy through practical, outcome-oriented skills training that goes beyond the theoretical content of conventional academic curricula. Freelancing has emerged as one of the more accessible and immediately actionable economic pathways available to young Pakistanis with digital skills, given that it does not require formal employment, geographic relocation, or significant capital to begin generating income. Pakistan’s freelance economy has grown considerably over recent years, with the country consistently ranking among the top sources of freelance talent globally across categories including software development, graphic design, content creation, and digital marketing, and programmes like SkillUp are part of the institutional infrastructure that has contributed to that growth by giving students structured training and community support as they build their capabilities.

A particularly meaningful element of the orientation was the presence of SkillUp alumni who attended to share their own freelancing journeys with the incoming Batch IV participants. Alumni engagement of this kind serves a specific and important function in the early stages of a new cohort’s experience, because hearing from people who were recently in the same position and have since built real careers and income through the programme provides a form of motivation and credibility that programme leadership alone cannot replicate. The alumni accounts of how they navigated the learning curve, found their first clients, built their portfolios, and developed sustainable freelancing practices give incoming participants a concrete and honest picture of what the path ahead looks like and what it takes to make the most of the opportunity the programme provides.

The orientation as a whole was designed to do more than deliver information about the programme structure and expectations. By bringing together programme leadership, returning alumni, and new participants in a shared space oriented around encouragement, connection, and practical inspiration, IU CORE created a community moment that sets a collaborative tone for the batch from its very first day. For students who are taking their first steps into the world of digital skills and freelancing, that sense of belonging to a community with a track record of producing successful outcomes is a meaningful foundation on which to build the discipline and persistence that skills development and freelancing success both require over the weeks and months of the programme ahead.
