ORA Studios Uses Rammed Earth and Mud Block Construction to Build Affordable Homes in Gilgit-Baltistan

Published on

ORA Studios, which stands for Rural Architecture Studio, is working out of Gilgit-Baltistan to bring traditional construction methods back into mainstream practice, using rammed earth walls and stabilized mud blocks to build homes that are cheaper, cooler, and better suited to the local climate than their concrete and steel counterparts.

The studio’s approach draws on building wisdom that existed in the region long before modern construction materials arrived, with a focus on materials that insulate naturally, allow walls to breathe, and work with the surrounding environment rather than imposing against it. The result is housing that costs a fraction of what conventional construction demands, built largely from what the land already offers.

ORA Studios recently appeared on Innovation in Action, a podcast series produced by Accelerate Prosperity that spotlights founders and innovators building solutions across Pakistan. The episode gave the studio a platform to walk through its methods and make the case that the most practical answers to Pakistan’s housing challenges are not new ones waiting to be invented but older ones waiting to be taken seriously again.

The broader significance of what ORA Studios is doing sits within a housing sector that has long defaulted to imported materials and construction methods poorly matched to Pakistan’s diverse climates and economic realities. By demonstrating that rammed earth and mud block construction can produce homes that are liveable, durable, and affordable, the studio is making an argument that applies well beyond Gilgit-Baltistan.
