In the bustling markets of Pakistan, a remarkable story is unfolding—the narrative of resilient women entrepreneurs reshaping the nation’s economic fabric. As we mark Women Entrepreneurship Day, the rise of women-led businesses in Pakistan stands as a beacon of change, a strategic imperative intertwining economic progress with societal norms.

The recent report by Karandaaz Pakistan delves into the intricate tapestry of women-led businesses, revealing stories of audacity and resilience. Beyond statistics, the report unveils the narratives of women navigating entrepreneurship, defying societal norms, and leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s economic landscape.

The Karandaaz Pakistan report represents 435 entrepreneurs across provincial capitals, capturing the diverse experiences and challenges faced by women in business. The majority, particularly those aged 21–40, are crafting a new narrative, challenging norms, and reshaping the entrepreneurial paradigm.

Motivations for women entrepreneurs span financial necessity (36%) to passion and hobby (34%), showcasing the diverse and multifaceted drivers behind their ventures. The report highlights the financial landscape, revealing contrasting realities—81% of female respondents have personal bank accounts, a significant surge compared to the overall financial inclusion of women. However, only 38% possess a business bank account, reflecting both progress and persistent challenges in financial inclusion.

Technological prowess is a defining feature, with 98% owning smartphones, leveraging platforms like WhatsApp Business for marketing. Business formalization is pivotal, with 39% formalizing their ventures through registration. The report sheds light on the financing landscape, where 74% assert independence from loans, while 83% turn to friends and family when financial support is sought.

Mehreen Raza’s journey with SHE-GUARD embodies resilience and determination. Born into a humble family, Mehreen’s startup goes beyond conventional boundaries, providing eco-friendly sanitary pads contributing to women’s empowerment and environmental sustainability. Facing societal taboos, SHE-GUARD remains undeterred, reaching milestones, gaining recognition nationally and globally.

Incubators, accelerators, and supportive programs have become pivotal players in fostering the growth and empowerment of women-led businesses. Programs like Karandaaz Venture, Standard Chartered Women in Tech, and Shell Tameer Awards contribute to closing the gender gap and advancing women’s economic empowerment.

Shumaila Rifaqat, Head of Innovation Challenge Fund at Karandaaz Pakistan, emphasizes the challenges faced by women-led businesses, including limited access to finance, biases, and societal expectations. Karandaaz’s Women Ventures program provides growth capital and comprehensive business development support, addressing the holistic development of women entrepreneurs.

As Pakistan’s entrepreneurial landscape evolves, programs like Women Ventures, Karandaaz Venture, and others play a pivotal role in shaping a more inclusive economic terrain. The commitment to closing the gender gap and advancing women’s economic empowerment sets the stage for a future where women entrepreneurs thrive, innovate, and contribute significantly to Pakistan’s dynamic business ecosystem.

The report’s insights, addressing barriers to growth, guide the way forward, shaping a future where women-led businesses lead economic development and societal change.
