Luma and Wonder Project launch AI-powered Innovative Dreams production studio for hybrid filmmaking

Published on

AI video generation startup Luma has announced the launch of Innovative Dreams, a production company developed in partnership with Wonder Project, a studio known for faith and family focused film and television content as well as its streaming presence on Amazon Prime Video. The collaboration marks a shift in how AI tooling companies are extending their capabilities beyond software into direct content production, combining creative filmmaking expertise with generative AI systems designed to streamline and expand production workflows.

The first project under this partnership will be titled “The Old Stories: Moses,” featuring British actor Ben Kingsley and scheduled for release this spring on Prime Video. According to Luma, Innovative Dreams is structured as a production services company where experienced filmmakers from director Jon Erwin’s team work alongside Luma’s creative technologists to support studios and filmmakers in executing large scale creative concepts. The studio’s approach is built around Luma Agents, newly introduced AI systems designed to manage end-to-end creative tasks spanning text, image, video, and audio generation. These systems are positioned as collaborative tools that allow production teams to make real-time adjustments during filming, including modifications to sets, props, lighting, and even integration of human actors into generated environments. Luma has described this model as a departure from traditional virtual production workflows, where most visual integration occurs in post-production, emphasizing instead a live, iterative creative process.

The company’s vision extends into what it calls real-time hybrid filmmaking, a method that blends elements of performance capture and virtual production into a unified workflow. Performance capture techniques, commonly associated with films such as “Avatar,” involve recording actor movement and facial expressions in controlled environments using tracking suits and markers, later translating those performances into digital characters. Virtual production, as popularized by “The Mandalorian,” uses large LED environments and real-time game engine graphics to project digital backgrounds during filming, allowing actors to perform within dynamically rendered worlds. Luma and Wonder Project aim to merge these approaches while layering AI generation into the process, enabling filmmakers to not only modify environments in real time but also generate entirely new visual identities for actors or characters, mapping their performances onto alternative appearances while preserving motion and expression fidelity.

This expansion into production follows a broader industry trend where AI companies are moving from tooling to direct creative output. AI startup Higgsfield recently released an original 10-minute sci-fi episode as part of its own content push, while London-based Wonder Studios is reportedly working on a documentary with Campfire Studios, reflecting increasing experimentation with AI-assisted storytelling formats. At the same time, Runway co-founder and co-CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela has argued that traditional film budgets could be reallocated to produce multiple AI-assisted films instead of a single high-cost production, potentially increasing the likelihood of commercial success. Luma founder and CEO Amit Jain has echoed similar perspectives, stating that rising production costs in Hollywood are creating structural constraints that generative AI could help address by improving both efficiency and creative flexibility without reducing quality standards.

Wonder Project, founded in 2023 by Jon Erwin and former Netflix executive Kelly Hoogstraten, focuses on delivering content for global faith and values audiences. Its earlier work includes “House of David,” a Biblical drama series about King David released on Amazon Prime Video in 2025. While Innovative Dreams is initially aligned with Wonder Project’s strengths in faith-based storytelling, both companies have indicated that the studio will not be limited to a single genre and is open to collaborations with other studios across entertainment categories. The partnership reflects a broader exploration of how AI driven production models can be integrated into mainstream filmmaking pipelines, potentially reshaping how stories are developed, visualized, and delivered to global audiences.
