Ali Shabbar, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of DeafTawk, has been conferred the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for his contributions to Pakistan’s startup ecosystem and his commitment to innovation, accessibility, and social inclusion. DeafTawk operates as a startup incubated at National Incubation Center Islamabad, with the recognition drawing attention to the startup’s roots within Ignite’s broader incubation network.
DeafTawk was co-founded by Ali Shabbar alongside Wamiq Hasan and Abdul Qadeer in 2019, building an application and AI driven system designed to assist members of the deaf community by connecting them with certified sign language interpreters in real time. The platform allows deaf users to communicate directly with doctors, teachers, employers, and family members through video calls, addressing a communication barrier that has historically limited access to essential services for many deaf individuals across Pakistan.
Ignite described DeafTawk as a clear example of how technology can address real world challenges, reduce communication barriers, and create greater opportunities specifically for the deaf community, framing Shabbar’s recognition as reflective of the kind of purpose driven innovation the organisation aims to support through its incubation network. The startup has continued to expand well beyond its original scope since its founding, growing to serve users across multiple countries and working with over one thousand one hundred professional interpreters offering services across six different sign language styles.
The recognition adds to a broader pattern of international visibility DeafTawk has achieved in recent years, including becoming the first Pakistani organisation to provide live sign language interpretation services at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, one of the world’s largest mobile technology events. The company has also worked with global accelerator programmes and continued to expand its operations across markets including Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Denmark, where it is now headquartered, while maintaining strong ties to its origins within Pakistan’s startup ecosystem.
Ignite framed Shabbar’s Tamgha-e-Imtiaz recognition as a reflection of its own commitment to nurturing startups capable of creating meaningful social impact, positioning DeafTawk as an example of the kind of inclusive, purpose driven innovation the organisation continues to prioritise supporting through National Incubation Center Islamabad and its broader network. The recognition was also acknowledged by Ministry Of IT and Telecommunication, reinforcing the institutional support that has continued to back DeafTawk’s growth since its early incubation stage.
