NIC Hyderabad Hosts US Consulate and David D’Angelo on Preparing University Startups for National Funding

Published on

National Incubation Center Hyderabad hosted David D’Angelo, a US entrepreneur, startup commercialization specialist, and Founder of Executive Media Network, together with Stephanie Arzate, a Foreign Service Officer at the US Department of State, and representatives from the US Consulate General Karachi. The session, titled Preparing University Startups for National Funding and Exposure: Lessons from US Accelerators, was led by D’Angelo, who drew on his experience supporting university based startups at VentureWell. It follows his workshop at NIC Lahore earlier in the week, which focused on taking Pakistani startups into the US market.

The discussion centered on a challenge that many research driven ventures share, how to move beyond the lab and into the market. D’Angelo explored how such ventures can secure competitive grants and non dilutive funding, strengthen their investment readiness, and build pathways to commercialization. Non dilutive funding matters especially for university teams, since grants allow founders to build a prototype and test demand without giving up ownership in the early stages. Participants also learned how to connect with national innovation networks and corporate partners, which can turn promising research into viable business opportunities.

The audience reflected the full chain that moves a university idea toward the market. NIC Hyderabad brought together incubation professionals and startups alongside representatives from university Offices of Research, Innovation and Commercialization, Business Incubation Centres, and universities themselves. That mix matters, since ORICs and BICs control much of the support a student or faculty founder can reach on campus, and the session emphasized bridging academic research with market needs so that promising ideas can translate into real world impact.

NIC Hyderabad thanked the US Consulate General Karachi, D’Angelo, and Arzate for the visit and for making the exchange possible. The session continues the center’s recent work with universities, which has included outreach at FAST Karachi on turning final year projects into market ready products and sessions with students in Jamshoro. With backing from the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, Ignite National Technology Fund, PTCL, LMKT, and Tech Destination Pakistan, the center is building links between campus research and national funding sources that could help more university founders reach commercial scale.
