BaKhabar Kissan: Pakistani AgTech Fights Weather Woes

Published on

Pakistani agricultural technology company, BaKhabar Kissan (BKK), is empowering farmers with a digital platform to tackle weather-related losses. As highlighted in the YouTube video “GSMA Innovation Fund Start-ups: BaKhabar Kissan (BKK),” the CEO of BaBasan, the company behind BKK, discussed the challenges faced by Pakistani farmers due to unpredictable weather patterns.

BaBasan’s unique solution combines physical and digital elements. They have successfully conducted pilot programs using weather stations to provide rice and wheat disease advisories, receiving positive feedback from participating farmers.

A critical boost came through funding from the GSMA Innovation Fund. This investment significantly accelerated BaBasan’s development timeline, reducing it from five years to just 1.5 years. The funding also enabled the creation of a user-friendly interface and improved user experience for their digital platform.

With the support of GSMA, BaBasan has expanded its reach tremendously. Their digital platform now boasts around 1 million users, and they have installed 150 weather stations. These stations serve a dual purpose: collecting vital data for a comprehensive risk management system and functioning as automated weather stations for efficient management.

Furthermore, BaBasan is collaborating with JZ to provide technical solutions and launch joint promotional initiatives. This strategic partnership aims to increase product awareness and adoption among farmers, ultimately empowering them to make informed decisions and safeguard their crops from weather-related threats.

BaBasan’s innovative approach and the support of the GSMA Innovation Fund are paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future for Pakistan.
